چکیده
Cognitive science and evolutionary psychology show great potential as explanatory paradigms for a wide array of cultural products and activities, including literature. In some scholars’ minds these two fields are emerging as the cornerstones of a major ‘‘new interdisciplinarity’’ that may well displace the relativistic interpretive paradigms that have dominated the humanities for the last few decades.Through a review of a number of recently published works, I assess the situation of these two fields in relation to the specific, currently reigning approaches to literary study as well as in relation tomore general issues of academic literary interpretation. What do we have so far, and what can we possibly expect these essentially empirical-scientific disciplines to add to literary criticism? If cognitive science and evolutionary psychology are to become important in a truly interdisciplinary sense, then what kinds of claims will they need to make? Most important, how will the problematic but unavoidable distinction between nature and nurture be dealt with? Though the kinds of explanations offered in both fields can obviously enough be relevant to defining what literature is in relation to the human organism, how will the same kinds of explanations be involved in the actual interpretation of specific literary texts? For only an approach that provides new interpretive possibilities of actual texts can succeed on any broad level. After considering examples of current interdisciplinary work that, regardless of their other strengths, do not turn out to be significantly new and differResearch for this work was funded in part by a grant from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. 6865 Poetics Today / 24:2
In the discussions of cognitive literary studies in this and earlier volumes of Poetics Today, there regularly seems to be at least a fairly broad consensus as to the significant differences between the typical literary-humanistic and the typical scientific approaches to making claims about a given object of study. Even if the object of study is the same—in this case, literature—a humanistic ap...
متن کاملOmniscience in Narrative Construction: Old Challenges and New
Since modernism, narrative omniscience has been much attacked, yet little studied and understood. This in inverse ratio to the central role it actually plays in narrative discourse and metadiscourse alike: the telling, reading, grouping, evolving, conceptualizing of stories, invented (e.g., novelistic) or inspired (biblical, Homeric). Here I review the various old-new critical thrusts against e...
متن کاملTranslation Research in the Framework of the Tel Aviv School of Poetics and Semiotics*
Israel has made an important contribution to translation studies. Since the late 1960s, its contribution in this field is mainly identified with the Tel Aviv school of poetics and semiotics. This paper sets out to introduce the basic ideas of the Tel Aviv school and show how they developed. It surveys the school's achievements in the various branches of translation studies — theory, descriptive...
متن کاملEzra Pound's Comparative Poetics
In his paper, "Ezra Pound's Comparative Poetics," Naikan Tao concentrates on Pound's theories regarding comparison and examines the significance of his comparative studies to the formulation of his poetics, an aspect that has not been sufficiently investigated. On the basis of Pound's work, Tao observes that the conception of comparison Pound shaped through his comparative studies is the intern...
متن کاملLithium abundances from the 6104 Å line in cool Pleiades stars
Lithium abundances determined by spectral synthesis from both the 6708 Å resonance line and the 6104 Å subordinate line are reported for 11 Pleiades late-G and early-K stars observed at the William Herschel Telescope. Firm detections of the weak subordinate line are found for four objects, marginal detections for four, and upper limits for the remaining three stars. Some of these spectra were p...
